Pros:

Located right in front of the Rosebank Mall and Gautrain station.

Cons:

Even though the food at the restaurant was excellent, it tended to get out of the kitchen rather slowly. Don't stay in for dinner if you are in a hurry.

Verdict

All in all we think this is a great fit for a luxury traveler. Whether you are in Johannesburg for business or leisure, the Monarch Hotel will fill your luxury needs.

Recently renovated, the Monarch Hotel opened its doors just in time for our visit. Located in the Rosebank suburb of Johannesburg (in front of the popular Rosebank Mall), the hotel was converted from the iconic 1930’s Saxonwold Post Office. As we stepped into the reception area, we felt like we had crossed centuries into the elegant Victorian era. The pale yellow facade gave way to a sophisticated European-style interior, decorated with classic furnishing and stylish design.

Our suite was extremely spacious, divided into two areas: a fully equipped lounge area with lots of lounging space and a master bedroom featuring a large and inviting king-sized bed and an opulent teakwood office table. It also featured an enormous terrace (large enough to host a dinner party) overlooking the busy Oxford Road. Heated floors, muted marble tabletops, classic fixtures and a full-size detached bathtub in the bathroom, fine linen, silk curtains – everything in the suite felt like it was built for a king.

The restaurant in the main floor was also a pleasant surprise. Even though the menu selection was quite limited, the dinner menu was changed daily and the food was excellent and prepared with high standards even though it took a while to be served. Each night, we enjoyed four-course dinners served with fine South African wine.

All in all we think this is a great fit for a luxury traveler. Whether you are in Johannesburg for business or leisure, the Monarch Hotel will fill your luxury needs.
