Price: $12 per night per person in dorm, $18 per bed in a private room.

Country:

City:

Hotel Type:

Stars:

Pros:

The pool; the hostel's location on the fifth floor and near many food stores; relaxed, social vibe and the awesome, helpful staff.

Cons:

The bathroom facilities were poor with blocked drains. Shared bathrooms should be cleaned more often and twin room needed an upgrade as floor boards were broken and didn't warrant the higher price.

Verdict

In the heart of Manila’s bustle lies Pink Manila- a hostel with a pool and a view…

When we first heard that Pink Manila had a pool, we were sold. Bedrooms and all other facilities be damned.  Because we had lived in South East Asia for the past nine months, we knew full well that the heat and humidity can be the biggest downer to your travels.

Reaching the fifth floor of a tall building in Don Pedro Street we walked into a noticeably pink reception and lounging area. Whilst checking in we laid eyes on the exceptionally blue pool in the entertainment area and the rather raunchy elevator with a drawing of a man and woman doing the nasty each time the elevator doors closed.

A few floors up, we found a peace and calm that is impossible to find down on the streets of loud Manila.  Here, weary backpackers lounged on the couches listening to house music and chilled hostel staff always eager for conversation and skilled in making the tastiest hamburgers around .  From the rooftop, we could relax on hammocks and enjoy incredible views of the massive city and hear its noisiness somewhat drowned out.

Because there were no private rooms available for our first two nights, we had to do with sleeping separately in bunk beds in a dorm room. A fan kept us cool throughout the day whilst the aircon only kicked in between 10pm and 10am.

After a day of exploring the city, there is nothing better than coming home to a ‘rooftop’ pool. As the sun began to sink over the city, the hostel began to wake up from its laidback slumber.  One night we found ourselves chatting, laughing and regaling travel tales with backpackers from Germany, Holland, Turkey, Egypt, Wales and America.  It’s times like these, when you really appreciate the experience of choosing a hostel over a hotel.  We ended up staying three days longer as we found this spot offered a great social vibe, gave us a space to work and use wifi during the day and was not too far from most things in the city.
