Our visit to the Shangri-La fell at the beginning of a two week trip in Kuala Lumpur and Borneo. After a drive from a rather average hotel stay with lackluster service, we walked into the Shangri-La’s gold palace of a lobby and quite literally fell into its open, hospitable arms. One Indonesian front-of house staff member immaculately dressed in shimmering Kebaya and skirt greeted me warmly at the door. Her genuine smile and interest in our stay in Kuala Lumpur was the greatest welcome and I ended up chatting to her quite often. She ushered us to the Horizon Club and that’s where the magic truly began…

Situated in the heart of the city, the Shangri-La is a lush oasis amidst the bustle. Shops, restaurants and bus stops can all be found down the road. Shopping lovers will find Suria KLCC only a 15 minute walk away and the Bukit Nanas Monorail station is quite close too and allows guests to escape the traffic and zoom around the city.

The two things I always appreciate most about luxury rooms are the beds and bathrooms. The Horizon Club Executive Suite with its red, orange, gold and brown hues delivers both of these in the best possible way with king-sized bed you sink into and my ultimate find in Asia, a deep soaking tub. The Nespresso machine had us jumping for joy. My husband totally approved of the work station and our views of the sprawling city and its twin towers. My test is that if a hotel room beckons you to stay within its doors in favour of going out, it’s a goodie.

The biggest draw card that urged us out of our room was the impeccable Horizon Club Lounge. Over those two days, it became our second home- Only cleaner, with plush couches, constant service and daily afternoon tea and refreshments. From the minute Aslina checked us into the hotel in the lounge, we slid into VIP heaven which was tough to leave behind. Delectable sweet treats, fresh fruits, juices and espresso based drinks were always available in what I like to call Horizon Heaven.

Families, business travelers and couples read newspapers, enjoyed buffet breakfasts and the space designed for ultimate relaxation. No sooner after we left the hotel, did we yearn to go back and have coffee in the lounge. We took advantage of the Health Club’s large range of fitness equipment and worked off some of the morning indulging on the treadmill in full view of the gardens.

We’ve yet to find a more luxurious experience in Kuala Lumpur and more importantly staff this intuitive and excellent.
