From Taidong train station until we reached the coastline of Doulan, we were transported to what appeared to be Taiwan’s Hawaii. This stretch of coastline took us past coast of palm trees, black rocks and beaches of dark brown sand. We figured our hostel would be somewhere near the coastal road until our driver headed up into the mountains.

We continued past farmlands on the slopes and into ever thicker forest overlooking a deep blue ocean. After what seemed like quite a never-ending incline, we were greeted by three dogs and two cats lounging on outdoor benches carved out of wood.  Roman and his wife, Emily, greeted us at the entrance of their colourful home with their two beautiful young children.

Turns out this is their home in the hills of Taitung, which they bought about four years ago.  Together they turned this into a rustic and art-filled hostel for others to be able to enjoy.  Roman is the artist and decorated each and every wall with paintings and patterns. For the lovers of the outdoors and rustic living including all the hippies at heart, this will be heaven for you.

Taitung Sea Art Hostel feels more like a homestay as you share the house with their family and there are no dorm rooms, only double rooms and one family room.  This is ideal for those who want  budget  accommodation, are keen to share stories with a wonderful Taiwanese-Canadian family and don’t mind having dogs, cats or babies around.  They only have one bike available for rent at 400NTD per day and believe me when you’re that far up in the mountain, you need your own transport. Emily will give you the number of a reliable driver Allen to pick you up from the train station, Eddie charges 400 NTD.

Bedrooms are colourful and basic with fans, but the experience of calling this home for a few days is incredible.  I was living in a house, but it felt like I was camping. The shower is an outdoor one where you can watch the clouds and butterflies go by.  Cook and wash your dishes in the outdoor kitchen and relax outside and enjoy a night filled with stars- rare in most parts of Taiwan.  People have suggested they allow campers but Emily says they refused as they would like to control the number of people here at one time.

For us, this stay in the Doulan Mountains with this lovely couple was an unforgettable experience.
